Judges: When the Next Generation Forgets

“In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” Judges 21:25 LSB

This is the final line of Judges.

The book begins with the generation after Joshua. They had seen the Lord’s work and experienced His deliverance. They prevailed because Yahweh fought for them, calling them to be strong and courageous.

But they did not fully obey Him (Judges 2:1–3). What began as partial obedience eventually became compromise.

Then a new generation arose who did not know Yahweh.

And so the line echoes throughout the book: “Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” It appears again and again, marking a steady decline.

The Book of Judges is a sobering reminder of the consequences when the knowledge of God is not intentionally passed on.

The Lord is sovereign over salvation. Yet He entrusts His people with the responsibility to go, teach and make Him known (Matthew 28: 19-20).

This brings me to ask:

💭 How am I faithfully obeying the Great Commission?

💭 How am I intentionally participating in reaching the next generation?
